DOVER, Del. (AP) — The Delaware Senate has approved an anti-pollution bill outlawing the intentional release of balloons into the environment.
The measure passed the Senate on a 19-1 vote Thursday and now goes to the House. The balloons are often used in celebrations ranging from birthday parties to funerals. But supporters of the bill say they contribute to litter and pose a danger to marine animals and other wildlife.
The intentional release of five or more balloons would be subject to a minimum fine of $250 for a first offense.
Intentionally releasing one to four balloons would be punishable by a minimum fine $25.
